Navratri

What is Navratri about?

Navratri is a Hindu festival dedicated to the Goddess Durga and Her many forms.

The literal translation of “Navratri” is nine nights which reflects the duration of this sacred festival.

The origins of Navratri can be traced to Hindu scriptures, particularly the legend of Goddess Durga’s battle against the demon Mahishasura. The nine nights represent the period when Durga battled the formidable demon, ultimately vanquishing him on the tenth day, commonly known as Dussehra – or Vijayadashami.

How is Navratri celebrated?

During Navratri, devotees across the globe observe this festival through prayers, fasting, and various forms of worship to honour the Goddesses.

Across India, Navratri is celebrated in a unique way in each state. Our organisation promotes and celebrates the Gujarati traditions associated with this magnificent celebration where devotees gather every night, coming together to sing and dance in perfect unity through a dance form known as Raas-Garba.

Raas-Garba are traditional Gujarati dance forms that originated as a way for devotees to honour and worship Goddess Durga and Her forms.

Devotional songs are sung in honour of deities whilst devotees perform synchronised dances around a central statue/image of the Goddess.
